FULLERTON, Calif. --- UC Irvine left the tying run stranded at third in the top of the ninth in a 2-1 loss to No. 12 Cal State Fullerton 2-1 Saturday at Goodwin Field. With the loss, UCI falls to 20-7 overall and 4-1 in the Big West.

The Anteaters out-hit the Titans 8-4 and were led by Drew Hillman, who had two hits. Christian Ramirez had the lone RBI for the team. Starter Andrew Thurman pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) while yielding three hits and dropped to 1-3 with the loss. Kyle Hooper picked up for Thurman and pitched three hitless innings while striking out two and walking three. Jimmy Litchfield pitched 2/3 innings, giving up one hit.

Cal State Fullerton’s (22-9, 4-1 Big West), Noe Ramirez limited UCI to one run in seven innings while striking out nine and walking just one batter to improve to 5-2. Nick Ramirez earned his seventh save of the season giving up one hit in an otherwise perfect ninth.

The Titans opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles and Nick Ramirez gave the Titans a one-run lead after sending a 3-2 pitch to right-field for the sacrifice, scoring Ivory Thomas from third.

Christian Ramirez tied the score for the Anteaters with an RBI single to center, driving in Hillman from second.

The Titans broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth. Jared Deacon singled and took second on a wild pitch by Thurman. Thurman gave way to Hooper, who walked Matt Orloff to put runners on first and second. An Anteater throwing error on a grounder to short would allow Deacon to score on the play.

Hillman led off the ninth with a clean base-hit through the left side and took second on the sacrifice by Shaeffer. A grounder to first by Christian Ramirez put Hillman on third but Nick Ramirez struck out Jon Hurst to end the game, handing UCI its first Big West loss.

The series concludes Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and will be aired on ESPNU.
