IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was held to one run and dropped the series to Cal State Fullerton in a 6-1 decision Sunday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. The conference series loss was UCI's first since falling twice to UC Riverside in 2008 (Apr. 18-20). The loss dropped the Anteaters to 4-2 in the Big West (18-11 overall) while CSF climbed to 18-12 overall (5-1 Big West).
UCI was shut out for seven innings by Titan starter Tyler Pill, who improved to 2-4 after striking out four and scattering seven hits while allowing an unearned run in the UCI eighth.
Cal State Fullerton broke through the scoreless tie in the fourth on a two-out single by Billy Marcoe. The Titans struck again with two outs in the fifth as Carlos Lopez doubled to drive in Gary Brown from first. Lopez then crossed the plate on a single by Pill to give CSF a 3-0 edge.
With runners on first and third with out one in the Fullerton sixth, the Anteaters caught Corey Jones in a run down but a throwing error would allow the second baseman to score from third. An Anteater error in the eighth also proved to be costly as the Titans capitalized and tacked on two runs in the inning, getting an RBI from Nick Ramirez and Austin Kingsolver.
The Anteaters put runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth but CSF went to Nick Ramirez, who retired the final two batters to end the game.
UCI starter Eric Pettis suffered his first loss of the season falling to 5-1. The right-hander struck out four and allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits. Matt Summers pitched .2 innings, yielding a run on two hits while Evan Brock retired the side in order in the ninth.
