IRVINE, Calif. --- Andy Lines struck out a career-high seven batters to lead No. 17 UC Irvine to a 3-0 shutout over San Diego State Tuesday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. UCI, which has recorded four shutouts this season, improves to 21-8 on the season.
Lines, who pitched four innings, faced the minimum through four before giving up a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth. The southpaw fanned six consecutive Aztec hitters en route to improve to 2-1 on the year. Nick Hoover picked up for Lines in the fifth and hurled three hitless innings while striking out three and did not walk a batter. Jimmy Litchfield added a scoreless eighth, striking out two and giving up a single before handing the ball off to Brian Hernandez who allowed a walk and a single before retiring the final three batters for his seventh save of the season.
The Anteaters (21-8) jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. D.J. Crumlich singled and took third on an error by starting pitcher Craig Rasmussen. Sean Madigan singled in the game-winning run with a hit to centerfield.
UCI scored twice in the third. Madigan figured in the inning, drawing a four-pitch walk and taking third on a hit-and-run single by Hernandez. Jordan Leyland executed for the Anteaters with the hit-and-run to plate Madigan and putting Hernandez on third. Hernandez would score the final run on a grounder to short.
Madigan, Hernandez and Leyland each posted two hits apiece while Drew Hillman added a hit in the second but was left stranded.
San Diego State's Craig Rasmussen fell to 1-3 after giving up a run on four hits in 1.2 innings. The Aztecs drop to 11-22 on the year.
