IRVINE, Calif. --- A pair of errors in the late innings proved to be costly as UC Irvine lost 3-2 to UC Davis Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. The loss at home is UCI’s first of the season (16-1) as the team drops to 7-4 in the Big West (25-10 overall). The Aggies improve to 3-5 (9-23) in league play.
UCI held a 2-1 lead after eight innings but the Aggies loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth against closer Brian Hernandez. Hernandez looked to be out of the inning as Seth Batty bounced a pitch in front of home plate but an error on the play would allow the tying run to score.
After forcing extra innings, UC Davis capitalized on a second error in the top of the 10th. Scott Lyman, batting as the designated hitter, hit a one-out single up the middle against reliever Nick Hoover and Eric Johnson followed with a flare to right to put runners on first and third. Hoover induced a grounder but an Anteater fielding error would prevent the double-play, allowing the go-ahead run to score, giving the Aggies a one-run lead.
Reliever Tom Briner gave up a leadoff walk in the UCI 10th but the rebounded by retiring the final three batters for the win. Briner improved to 2-1 after giving two innings of no-hit baseball. Lyman, the starting pitcher, hurled 6.1 innings, walking six and striking out five but holding UCI to two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Starter Crosby Slaught pitched 5.1 innings, striking out two and holding UC Davis to a run on five hits. Jimmy Litchfield pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, fanning two and giving up a hit. Hernandez yielded a run on one hit in 1.1 innings while Hoover was hit with the loss after giving up a run on two hits in the 10th.
The series concludes Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
