April 23, 2011
IRVINE, Calif. --- Matt Whitehouse pitched a career-high 7.1 innings and struck out a personal-best six batters to lead UC Irvine to a 6-1 win over UC Davis Saturday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. The Anteaters move to 8-4 in Big West action and 26-10 overall with the win while the Aggies drop to 9-24 (3-6) on the year.
Whitehouse, in his fourth start of the year, faced the minimum through the first 4.1 innings before eventually yielding the lone Aggie run in the fifth. The southpaw walked just one and scattered six hits to improve to 2-0 and lower his ERA to 2.00. Andrew Thurman struck out two in 1.2 innings of one-hit relief to end the game.
The Aggies trimmed the lead to one in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Justin Andrade but the Anteaters widened the margin to four runs in the bottom of the frame. UCI strung together four consecutive singles with Reyes and D.J. Crumlich scoring on hits from Sean Madigan and Brian Hernandez. Madigan would score the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Drew Hillman.
UCI added a run in the eighth on the sacrifice bunt from Jon Hurst to plate Jordan Leyland, who had walked, took second on a grounder and third on a wild pitch.
Reyes led the team with two RBI while Hernandez was 3 for 4 with a run batted in. Madigan also drove in a run while batting 2 for 3.
UC Davis starter Anthony Kupbens fell to 3-5 after giving up five runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. Kevin Grove led the team with two hits.
