IRVINE, Calif. --- Daniel Bibona struck out 10 and held CS Bakersfield to two runs as UC Irvine came away with a 3-2 win Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. The Anteaters climbed to 25-14 with the decision while the Roadrunners dropped to 18-21.
Bibona did not walk a batter and scattered nine hits in a seven-inning stint to improve to 8-2 on the season. Kyle Necke hurled a hitless eighth and Eric Pettis shut the door on the Roadrunners, striking out the side in the ninth as the UCI staff posted a season-high 15 batters.
UCI's offense staked Bibona to a 2-0 lead in the first. Casey Stevenson sent a sharp single up the middle and took second after Brian Hernandez was hit by the pitch. Ronnie Shaeffer was issued a two-out walk to load the bases for Jordan Leyland, who delivered the clutch hit, a two-run single to right.
CSUB's Mick Gaston cut the lead in half in the top of the second, driving 2-2 pitch over the left centerfield wall for a solo home run.
However, Stevenson sparked the `Eaters again in the third, belting a leadoff triple to center and scored on Hernandez's grounder to second.
CSUB answered again as Brandon Boren tripled to center to lead off the top of the fifth and scored on a passed ball. The Roadrunners would have one more opportunity to score in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with one out but Necke struck out the final two batters to preserve the UCI lead.
Stevenson led UCI with two hits, going 2 for 4 with a single and a triple while Leyland registered a pair of RBI on one hit. Pettis recorded his fourth save of the season.
CSUB starter Mickey Jannis went the distance, holding UCI to three runs on five hits in eight innings but fell to 4-3. Boren and Joey Mills had two hits apiece for the Roadrunners.
