BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- Pitchers Andrew Thurman and Kyle Hooper combined for 8.2 shutout innings to lead No. 17 UC Irvine to an 11-6 win over Cal State Bakersfield Saturday at Hardt Field. With the win, UCI climbs to 27-12 while CSUB drops to 25-14.
The Anteaters scored four runs in the first inning with Drew Hillman doubling in a pair of runs to put UCI on the board 2-0. Hillman scored on a fielder's choice by Jordan Leyland and the Anteaters capitalized on two Roadrunner miscues before Tommy Reyes drove in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
However, CSUB answered with six runs in the first to take a 6-4 lead. The Roadrunners strung together four consecutive singles to get on the board 4-1. Cael Brockmeyer's infield hit would cut the lead to 4-2 and Nick Younger belted a two-out bases-clearing double to put the team up 5-4 and chase starter Crosby Slaught from the game. Andrew Thurman looked to be out of the inning after a groundball to first-baseman Jordan Fox but Thurman was issued an error after dropping the ball at first. Younger alertly scored from second on the play, giving CSUB a 6-4 advantage.
That would be all for the Roadrunners as Thurman went on to deal six innings, striking out four and yielding six hits to improve to 2-3. Hooper picked up for Thurman with two outs and two runners on in the seventh and hurled 2.1 hitless innings to pick up his first save of the season.
UCI tied the game in the third. Brian Hernandez singled to lead off the inning and took third on Hillman's double to left. Leyland smacked a 2-0 offering from starter Jonathan Montoya to left for his second and third RBI of the game, knotting the score at 6-6.
The Anteaters would then take the lead for good after loading the bases in the fourth. Sean Madigan was hit by the pitch to push across Reyes for the eventual game-winning run and the lead widened to two on Hillman's sac fly to center.
Christian Ramirez doubled in a run with two outs in the fifth for UCI and Ronnie Shaeffer's single in the seventh would drive in Leyland from second. The Anteaters capped the scoring in the eighth as D.J. Crumlich doubled before eventually scoring on a wild pitch from reliever Louis Cazares.
Hillman was 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Leyland also drove in three runs on two hits while scoring twice. Hernandez added three hits while Shaeffer posted a run batted in on a pair of hits. UCI belted six doubles, tying a single-game season high.
The series concludes Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
