Anteaters Edge Past Roadrunners Again
May 1, 2010
IRVINE, Calif. --- Christian Bergman pitched 8.1 strong innings to lead UC Irvine to its second straight 3-2 win against Cal State Bakersfield Saturday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. With the win, the Anteaters climb to 26-14 while CSUB drops to 18-22 on the season.
Bergman struck out seven, did not walk a batter and was two outs shy of his second consecutive complete game. The senior right-hander held the Roadrunners to two runs on four hits to improve to 5-2 on the season. After giving up an RBI groundout in the fourth, Bergman retired 15 straight before handing the ball off to Kyle Necke, who retired the final two batters to log his seventh save of the season.
Sean Madigan led UCI at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a run scored. After hitting a single to left-centerfield to lead off the Anteater first, Madigan took third on Casey Stevenson's double to left. Brian Hernandez bounced an 0-1 pitch to short to score Madigan on the fielder's choice. Jordan Leyland, who drove in two runs in the UCI first last night, came through for the Anteaters again with a two-out triple to plate Hernandez and give UCI a 2-0 lead.
CSUB answered with a run in the second. Jason Kudlock tripled to right to lead off the frame and scored on a Derek Geisinger's grounder to short. Kudlock hit his second triple to lead off the fourth and tied the game at 2-2, scoring on J.J. Henry's RBI groundout.
The Anteaters took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two outs. Reliever Martin Medina hit Stevenson with the pitch, pushing Francis Larson across from third for the eventual game-winning run. UCI threatened to extend the lead in the fifth, loading the bases with one out but Medina retired the final two batters to escape the jam and went on to face the minimum in the final three innings.
Starter Matt Reyes was lifted after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits to fall to 3-3 with the loss. Medina pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one. Kudlock led the team going 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
The series concludes Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
