IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior Dillon Bell drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as UC Irvine escaped with an 8-7 win against Cal State Bakersfield Sunday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. UCI improved to 27-14 overall with the win in the series finale while the Roadrunners dropped to 18-23.

After leading CSUB 7-2 through seven innings, the Anteaters watched the Roadrunners rally to score five runs in the final two innings and knot the game at seven runs apiece.

Bakersfield's J.J. Henry doubled past the first-base bag with two outs in the eighth to trim UCI's lead to 7-4.

CSUB then loaded the bases in the ninth against Kyle Necke. After falling behind 2-0 against the fourth batter of the frame, Necke was lifted for Kyle Hooper, who issued the RBI base on balls to Martin Medina. Outfielder Jason Kudlock followed with a single to right to bring CSUB to within a run at 7-6. Lefty Ruben Orosco took over for Hooper and Kyle Richardson bounced into a run-scoring fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. The Roadrunners loaded the bases a second by coaxing a full-count walk from reliever Matt Summers, but the sophomore right-hander struck out the final two batters to end the inning.

Brian Hernandez led off the bottom of the ninth with a base on balls from reliever Juan Padilla and Jeff Cusick followed with a single through the left side. Shaeffer was intentionally walked, setting the scene for Bell, who drove reliever Spenser Messmore's first pitch deep to center to plate pinch-runner Jordan Fox for the game-winning run.

Summers improved to 2-2 with the win. Starter Eric Pettis pitched seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out two in the no-decision. Cusick led UCI with three hits while Tommy Reyes with 2 for 3. Shaeffer drove in two runs on 2 for 3 hitting and scored twice while Bell was 1 for 1 with an RBI.

The Anteaters broke the scoreless tie with four runs in the third. With the bases loaded, Shaffer bounced a first-pitch offering from Mike McCarthy to the left side of the mound. McCarthy lunged to knock the ball down but then threw past first baseman Derek Geisinger, allowing two runs to score and putting runners on second and third on the error. On the ensuing play, Jordan Leyland's grounder to short rolled under Kyle Richardson's glove, scoring Cusick and Shaeffer for the four-run lead.

Bakersfield got on the board in the fifth on an RBI single from Brandon Boren and fielder's choice by Kevin Younger.

CSUB starter Mike McCarthy gave up seven runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings while Juan Padilla fell to 0-1 with the loss after giving up one run on 1.2 innings of work. The Roadrunners were led by Boren, who was 3 for 4 with an RBI while Henry added two RBI on two hits.
