NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Francis Larson drove in Ben Orloff on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning to lift UC Irvine over Cal State Northridge, 1-0, in Big West Conference action Saturday at Matador Field.

UCI starter Bryce Stowell struck out eight and allowed just two hits over 7.2 innings to improve to 6-2 on the season. Eric Pettis pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save of the season.

Ollie Linton had a pair of hits and a stolen base as UCI improved to 30-11 overall and 8-6 in the Big West.

For the second time in as many days, the Matadors threatened in the ninth. Ryan Pineda drew a one-out walk in the frame and advanced to second on Drew Muren's single to center. However, Pettis induced a fly-ball out to center and Ryan Fisher handled a sharp grounder to first off the bat of C.J. Belanger to record the final out.

John Parham had two hits for the Matadors (19-24, 5-12).

The teams meet in the series' finale Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Northridge.
