No. 1 UC Irvine Ties Season-High Runs in Win Over UC Davis
May 16, 2009 IRVINE, Calif. --- Top-ranked UC Irvine tied a season-high with 19 runs scored, defeating UC Davis 19-6 to win the series Saturday at Anteater Ballpark. The victory lifted the Anteaters to 39-12 overall and 19-1 in the Big West while UC Davis fell to 10-39 (3-17) overall. Catcher Ronnie Shaeffer tied a career-high with four hits while driving in three runs. Ryan Fisher was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3 with three RBI. Eric Deragisch drove in a pair of runs on 3 for 4 hitting while scoring three runs and Jeff Cusick had two RBI and two runs scored. Ben Orloff put together his second straight multiple-hit game, batting 3 for 5 with an RBI. Christian Bergman improved to 9-1 after pitching six innings and yielding three runs on 10 hits while striking out three. Kyle Necke pitched a scoreless seventh and was followed by Cory Hamilton, who struck out two while giving up a pair of runs. Matt Dufour closed out the game in the ninth, allowing a run on one hit. UC Davis scored in the top of the first on Ryan Scoma's sacrifice fly to drive in Scott Heylman, who singled and advanced to third on a hit by Ty Kelly. Deragisch stole home to tie it in the bottom of the first. After a single to left, the outfielder reached third on a failed pickoff by starter Scott Lyman. With Shaeffer at the plate, Deragisch beat the pitch and slid into home for the tying run.
The Anteaters took a 2-1 lead in the second as Ryan Fisher scored from second on an infield single by Orloff but the Aggies put together three straight singles in the third inning with Kelly knotting the score at 2-2.
UCI claimed the lead for good in the third on a two-run home run by Cusick, his second of the series and fifth of the season. The Anteaters added a run in the inning on Fisher's RBI hit for a 5-2 lead. Fisher struck again in the fourth with a two-run single to right field, highlighting a four-run inning for a 9-2 lead. UC Davis' Grant Hirniese singled in a run in the sixth but the Anteaters broke the game open in the seventh with eight runs in the bottom of the inning as Deragisch delivered a run-scoring triple and was followed by Shaeffer and Tony Asaro, who posted RBI doubles. Shaeffer belted a two-run home run in the eighth and finished the day a triple shy of the cycle. Lyman fell to 0-4 after giving up nine runs on 10 hits in four innings. The Aggies were led by Hirneise, who recorded three RBI on 2 for 4 hitting while Kelly went 3 for 3 at the plate. The series concludes Sunday at 1:00 p.m. |
