UC Irvine Edges UC Davis, 4-3, to Even Series
May 17, 2008 DAVIS, Calif. --- Eric Deragisch, attempting to steal home, knocked the ball loose from catcher Jake Jefferies and scored the eventual game-winning run as UC Irvine (35-15) edged UC Davis (32-20) 4-3 Saturday at Dobbins Stadium. The win evened both teams' conference records at 11-9. For the second time in as many days, UC Irvine got on the scoreboard first with an unearned run as Dillon Bell was pushed home on an RBI groundout by Sean Madigan in the Anteater second. Bell singled to lead off the inning and reached second on a failed pickoff attempt before taking third on a sacrifice bunt. The Aggies broke through in the fifth, stringing together three straight singles with the game-tying hit coming off the bat of Ty Kelly. UCI reclaimed the lead in the seventh as pinch hitter Brock Bardeen blasted a two-run home run over the right-field wall to give the Anteaters a 3-1 advantage. However, UC Davis answered in its half of the inning as Kelly delivered again with a run-scoring double and then came around on Ryan Scoma's single up the middle. Trailing 4-3 in the ninth, the Aggies threatened with runners on first and second with one out but closer Eric Pettis secured the win, retiring the final two batters on fly-ball outs. Pettis improved to 4-2 after hurling three innings while surrendering a run on three hits.
Freshman Crosby Slaught made the start in place of Bryce Stowell and pitched four strong innings, holding the Aggies to one run on six hits. Slaught escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first, inducing Scoma to hit into an inning-ending double-play. The right-hander then proceeded to set down the next seven batters before UC Davis loaded the bases again in the fourth with two outs. However, Matt Dempsey hit a fly-ball to center to end the inning.
UCI reliever Tom Calahan picked up for Slaught in the fifth and pitched two innings, giving up a run on three hits. Aggie starter Brad McAtee stymied the UCI offense for much of the game, facing two over the minimum through six innings. However, the right-hander registered the loss to fall to 7-4 after giving up the leadoff single to Deragisch in the eighth. McAtee gave up four runs on six hits and struck out three and did not issue a walk in 7.1 innings of work. Seven Anteaters recorded a hit apiece with Bardeen pacing the club with two RBI. |
