UC Irvine Wins Series Over UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine scored three in the first and never relinquished the lead, defeating UC Davis, 5-3, Sunday at Dobbins Stadium. The win lifted the Anteaters to a tie for fourth at 12-9 while the Aggies dropped to 11-10.

Brock Bardeen and Eric Deragisch led UCI with two hits apiece with Sean Madigan coming up with a key two-run single in the first. Starter Daniel Bibona hurled 6.2 innings, striking out six and walking none while giving up three runs on 12 hits to improve to 7-3. Closer Eric Pettis locked up his 14th save striking out one in the ninth.

UC Davis starter Bryan Evans ran into trouble in the top of the first, hitting Ollie Linton to lead off the game and walking Casey Stevenson. Evans then issued one-out walk to Dillon Bell to load the bases. Bardeen singled through the right-side to put the Anteaters on the board and Madigan drove a pitch up the middle to stake the club to a 3-0 lead.

The Aggies got on the board on Kyle Mihaylo's double in the third to score Ty Kelly but UCI tacked on a run in the fourth on Aaron Lowenstein's RBI single.

In the UCI seventh, Linton led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Stevenson. Orloff pushed a bunt up the first-base line. Linton rounded third on the play and first baseman Evan Hudson's throw to third got away from Kelly, allowing Linton to score for a 5-1 edge.

UC Davis closed the gap to two in the bottom of the inning as Ryan Scoma doubled down the right-field line to drive in two runs but Christian Bergman retired the final batter and then pitched a perfect eighth before handing the ball off to Pettis.

Evans fell to 3-3 after giving up four runs on six hits in six innings. Scoma led the Aggies, batting 3 for 4 with two RBI.
