IRVINE, Calif. --- Pitcher Scott Gorgen pitched a four-hit complete-game shutout to lead 12th-ranked UC Irvine to a 9-0 win over Cal State Northridge Friday in Big West Conference action at Anteater Ballpark. It was Gorgen's third complete game of the season and the team's fifth shutout as UCI improved to 36-14-1 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
Gorgen improved to 9-2, striking out eight batters and was given plenty of run support as Taylor Holiday, Ben Orloff and Tyler Vaughn each drove in two runs apiece. Holiday, who was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, led off the bottom of the first with his sixth triple of the season and scored on Orloff's grounder to short.
The Anteaters added two runs in the third as Vaughn doubled to lead off the frame and was driven in on an Orloff grounder. Holiday, who reached first on a bunt single, would eventually cross the plate on Cody Cipriano's sacrifice fly to right.
UCI led off the fourth with six consecutive singles, scoring three runs on RBI hits from catcher Aaron Lowenstein, Vaughn and Holiday to extend the lead to six. The Anteaters would add three runs in the eighth on a Matador error and sacrifice flies from Vaughn and Holiday.
Matador starter Bobby Paschal fell to 0-5 after giving up nine runs (eight earned) and striking out five in 7.1 innings.
