RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to hang on to a one-run lead as UC Riverside scored twice in the eighth to come away with a 2-1 win Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex. The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for the Anteaters as UCI drops to 37-14 overall (15-6 Big West).
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, UCR's Trevor Hairgrove worked a one-out walk from Andrew Thurman to start the rally. Thurman gave way to Jimmy Litchfield, who was tagged for an RBI double by Ryan Goetz, tying the score at 1-1. Tony Nix followed with a single to right to plate Goetz for the eventual game-winning run.
Matt Whitehouse spun a seven inning shutout in the start for UCI, striking out seven and holding the Highlanders to just four hits but did not factor in the decision. Litchfield fell to 2-1 with the loss after giving up a run on three hits.
Jordan Fox had the lone RBI for UCI in the fourth, knocking in a run with a one-out single to left to score Sean Madigan from second, who had coaxed a leadoff walk from starter Trevor Frank and took third on a single down the left-field line from Brian Hernandez.
Frank limited UCI to a run on four hits in seven innings while striking out three but also did not figure in the decision. Dustin Emmons pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts to improve to 6-3 on the year.
