Nebraska Game Notes
* With the loss, Nebraska fell to 41-15-1 on the season and 29-4-1 at
Hawks Field. The Huskers also dropped to 31-24 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including a 14-6 mark at Hawks Field (19-6 overall at home including games played at Buck Beltzer).
* The attendance for Saturday night's game was 8,646, the second-largest
NCAA Regional crowd in Hawks Field history. The crowd was the seventh-largest in school history.
* Nebraska was held to two runs or less for just the sixth time this
season and for the first time at Hawks Field. The last time the Huskers failed to score at least three runs at home was a 9-2 loss to Baylor on May 11, 2007. NU had scored at least three runs in 36 consecutive games at Hawks Field.
* Jake Opitz homered for the third time at the NCAA Lincoln Regional. The
homer was his team-leading 11th of the season and gave him more home runs in 2008 than his first three seasons combined (10 homers). Opitz, who has eight homers in his last 18 games, also leads Nebraska with 28 extra-base hits this season.
* Opitz finished 2-for-4 in the game, extending his career-long hitting streak to 14 games. During the hitting streak, Opitz is batting .434
(23-for-53) with five homers, 11 RBIs and 13 walks. He has also reached base safely in 25 of the last 26 games.
* Mitch Abeita singled in his first at bat before being retired in the
third. Abeita opened the NCAA Lincoln Regional 4-for-4 with a pair of walks, reaching base safely in each of his first six plate appearances.
Abeita has reached base safely in 54 of 55 games this season.
* Ben Kline finished 1-for-3 in the game, extending his career-high
hitting streak to four games.
* Johnny Dorn tossed his second complete game of the season, but has been
on the losing end of the decision both times. His loss on Saturday was his first loss at Hawks Field this season and his first since April 21, 2007 against Texas.
* Dorn surrendered a career-high 11 hits. In his first 57 starts at
Nebraska, Dorn had never allowed more than nine hits in a game.
* Dorn allowed three earned runs or less for the 13th time in 15 starts
this season.
* Dorn has now thrown 107.1 innings this season, joining Shane Komine as
the only Huskers to throw at least 100 innings twice in their career.
* Dorn struck out six Anteaters on the night. He recorded his 100th
strikeout of the season with his fourth punch out of the game. Dorn now has 298 career strikeouts, a total that ranks second in Nebraska history.
* Nebraska scored in only one inning on Saturday, plating two runs in the
third. Entering the game, NU had scored in 14 of its last 17 innings at Hawks Field, including seven of eight frames on Friday. Overall, the Huskers had scored at least nine runs in three straight home games.
* Nebraska trailed at Hawks Field for the seventh straight game (5-2
record in those contests). Overall, the Huskers trailed at home for the 11th time in their last 12 home games (8-3 record in those contests).
* Nebraska has given up at least 10 hits in nine of its last 12 games.
UC Irvine Game Notes
* UC Irvine improved to 40-16 this season with the win. The Anteaters are
9-6 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. UC Irvine, which is making their third straight regional appearance, has now won five consecutive NCAA Regional games after posting a 3-0 record at the 2007 Austin Regional.
* The Anteaters reached 40 wins for the second straight season. The 40-win
season is only Irvine's fourth in the 30-year history of the program.
* UC Irvine also improved to 35-0 this season when leading after seven
innings and 37-0 when leading after eight innings.
* UCI is now 23-8 on the road this season, including a 6-3 record at
top-25 teams. Overall, the Anteaters are 7-5 this season against ranked teams.
* Irvine improved to 9-1 in one-run games this season with the victory and
2-3 in televised games
* Ollie Linton's game-winning home run in the fifth inning was his fourth
of the season and his first since April 27, a total of 17 games.
* Starting pitcher Daniel Bibona tossed a career-high 8.0 innings. Bibona
allowed just four hits, including three with two outs. The three hits were one shy of his career low, as he allowed three hits to USC on Feb. 27.
* Eric Pettis recorded his 17th save of the season, tying Blair Erickson's
school record, set last season.
* Casey Stevenson tied his career high with three hits, totaling three
hits for the fourth time in his career.
* UC Irvine entered the NCAA Lincoln Regional allowing just 0.46 home runs
per game, but through the first two games of the regional, the Anteaters have surrendered three long balls.
