UC Irvine Wins Lincoln Regional With 8-0 Win Over Oral Roberts
June 1, 2008 LINCOLN, Neb. --- UC Irvine won the Lincoln Regional Sunday night as Bryce Stowell struck out a career-high 13 batters and Sean Madigan knocked in a career-high five runs as the Anteaters defeated Oral Roberts 8-0. Stowell, who was named the Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player, issued no walks and allowed five hits in 7.2 innings of work (tying his career high) in improving to 8-2 on the season. Christian Bergman retired the last two batters in the ninth inning as the `Eaters climbed to 41-16 overall entering Super Regional action next weekend. Madigan, who was selected to the All-Lincoln Regional team, had an RBI single in the third inning and a pair of two-run singles in the seventh and ninth innings. Casey Stevenson joined Madigan with three hits apiece. Stevenson scored three runs and drove in two. Jeff Cusick had a pair of hits and scored twice. UCI pushed across a run in the first as Stevenson's sacrifice fly scored Ollie Linton. Madigan's first RBI single of the night in the third plated Stevenson, who had doubled. The `Eaters padded their lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Stevenson drove in Linton with a single and a single by Madigan brought home Cusick and Ben Orloff. Brock Bardeen's single knocked in Stevenson for the final run of the inning.
Madigan's third single of the evening in the ninth inning brought home Stevenson and Cusick to end the scoring. Carlos Luna took the loss for ORU, allowing five earned runs and eight hits in 6.1 innings. The Golden Eagles, who defeated Nebraska 8-0 earlier Sunday in the elimination game, ended their season with a 48-14 overall record. Orloff and Linton joined Madigan on the All-Regional team while Daniel Bibona joined Stowell on the All-Regional pitching team. Lincoln Regional All-Tournament Team |
