Leyland, who was a 2010 Los Angeles Regional All-Tournament choice, was 3 for 5 with three runs scored while Shaeffer was 2 for 4 with three RBI. Tommy Reyes and D.J. Crumlich each posted a run batted in on three hits while Drew Hillman drove in a run on one hit.
UCI junior Matt Summers, the Big West Pitcher of the Year, struck out six in six innings in winning his ninth consecutive game and improving to 11-2 on the year. He allowed five hits and walked just one, with two of his three runs allowed unearned.
UCI capitalized on four Bulldog errors as six of the Anteaters' 12 runs were unearned. The 'Eaters had 15 hits in the victory while Fresno State (40-15) recorded eight.
The Anteaters opened the game with a five-run fifth. Crumlich singled to lead off the inning and Hernandez (2-for-5) hit a one-out grounder to short that went underneath the glove of Garrett Weber to put runners on first and third. Hillman took advantage of the error by flaring a single to right to score Crumlich for the team's first run. Jordan Fox bounced a ball to second but pitcher Greg Gonzales, who was covering first base, was unable to hang on to the ball, allowing Hernandez to score and Fox to take first on the fielder's choice. Christian Ramirez slapped a single to center to extend the inning. With two outs, Leyland drove a full-count pitch to right field. Outfielder Dusty Robinson looked to have robbed Leyland of a home run with a grab over the wall but Robinsons was unable to hang on to the ball as Leyland recorded his fourth round-tripper of the year.
Fresno State snapped Summers' scoreless streak at 21.1 innings with two runs in the third. The Bulldogs opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Brennan Gowens hit a grounder to deep short that allowed Pat Hutcheson to score from second. An Anteater error put runners on first and third for Jordan Ribera who grounded to short to drive in Danny Muno from third, cutting UCI's lead to 5-2.
UCI responded as Crumlich cashed in Reyes' leadoff double in the fourth with a single through the left side to extend the lead to 6-2.
The Anteaters broke the game open in the fifth. Hernandez's leadoff single was followed by a out-out error that put runners on first and second. Ramirez was intentionally walked to load the bases and Leyland delivered again with a single to right-center to drive in two. Reyes and Shaeffer followed with consecutive RBI hits to stake the team to a 10-2 lead.
Shaeffer capped UCI's scoring in the seventh with a two-run single to drive in Leyland and Reyes.
Gonzalez suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 11-1. He allowed 10 runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings.
Jimmy Litchfield pitched two hitless innings before handing the ball off to Kyle Hooper, who allowed three unearned runs in the Fresno State ninth. Andy Lines gave up a walk before securing the final out of the game.
The Anteaters improve to 40-16 overall and advance to the winner's bracket, where they will meet USF Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The Dons defeated top-seeded UCLA, 3-0, Friday night.
