Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. – LSU’s Trey Watkins hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the 11th to lift second-seeded LSU over No. 3 UC Irvine, 11-10 at the Los Angeles Regional held at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium Friday.

With two outs in the 11th Austin Nola drew a walk from pitcher Eric Pettis and Alex Edward followed with a single to the hole at short. Leon Landry was issued a second free pass to load the bases for Watkins, who drove a 1-2 pitch to right-field to drive in the game-winning runs and put LSU into the winner’s bracket at 41-20.

UCI opened the scoring with a two-run home run from Francis Larson in the second but LSU responded by scoring twice in the third and taking the lead on a solo home run by Alex Edward in the fourth.

Ryan Fisher tied the score in the fifth with a solo home run, his fourth of the season, but the Anteaters found themselves trailing 7-3 after Micah Gibbs belted a three-run home run to highlight a four-run fifth.

UCI narrowed the margin to two runs in the seventh, starting the run with back-to-back hits from D.J. Crumlich and Sean Madigan to lead off the inning. Brian Hernandez drove in a run with a one-out single and Jeff Cusick also delivered the clutch hit with a flare to center to shave the lead to 7-5.

Gibbs answered for the Tigers with his fourth RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to center to score Mikie Mahtook and widen the margin to three at 8-5.

Larson led off the eighth with a solo home run, his second round-tripper of the day, the second time he has hit two home runs in a game this year. The Anteaters then put runners on first and second with no outs. A successful sacrifice bunt by Madigan moved both Anteater runners into scoring position for Casey Stevenson, who reached first on an infield single, scoring Fisher and cutting the lead to 8-7.

After Nick Hoover held the Tigers scoreless in the eighth, UCI tied the score with a pinch-hit double from Jordan Leyland to score pinch-runner Jordan Fox from second following a single up the middle by Drew Hillman and a wild pitch. Fisher smacked a two-out hit to center to plate pinch-runner Matt Summers, giving UCI a one-run edge at 9-8.

However, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Blake Dean singled to left and came around to score on a sinking line-drive by Austin Nola that was just out of the reach of a diving Madigan to even the ledger again at 9-9.

UCI then took a one-run lead (10-9) in the 11th. Cusick took first on a four-pitch walk and was sacrifice to second by Fox. Following a pinch-hit single by Ronnie Shaeffer, Larson registered his fourth RBI of the day with the sacrifice on the squeeze play.

Larson finished the day 2 for 5 with four RBI while Fisher was 3 for 5 with two runs batted in. Stevenson and Cusick each drove in a run on two hits while Madigan and Hillman also registered two hits apiece.

Starter Daniel Bibona lasted 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits while striking out two in the no-decision. Evan Brock pitched 2.1 innings, giving up one run while Hoover worked 1.1 shutout innings. Pettis fell to 9-4 after giving up three runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work.
