UC Irvine Defeats LSU 11-5 at Baton Rouge Super Regional

BATON ROUGE, La. --- UC Irvine snapped LSU's 23-game winning streak with an 11-5 win Saturday night in the first game of the Baton Rouge Super Regional.

Scott Gorgen struck out eight in 6.2 innings and Sean Madigan and Brock Bardeen hit home runs to lead the Anteaters past the Tigers at Alex Box Stadium. The second game in the super regional is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PDT) on ESPN and KUCI/88.9 FM.

Madigan homered in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Francis Larson and Casey Stevenson ahead of him, to extend UCI's lead to 6-1.

Bardeen cracked a pinch-hit shot in the eighth, also scoring Ben Orloff, who had singled earlier, to give the `Eaters an 11-2 lead.

Jeff Cusick had three hits and two RBI for UCI, which improved to 42-16 overall. Madigan added a pair of hits as the `Eaters' offense generated 13 hits.

Ollie Linton and Orloff opened the game with back-to-back walks. Cusick's sacrifice bunt moved them up and Tony Asaro then delivered a two-run single for the early lead.

Gorgen, who improved to 12-3 on the season, yielded six hits, two runs (one earned) and four walks.

Christian Bergman pitched a perfect ninth as UCI won its sixth straight game.

DJ LeMahieu hit a two-run homer for the Tigers (46-17-1) in the eighth. Matt Clark, Micah Gibbs and Ryan Schimpf had two hits each for LSU, the national No. 7 seed.

Starting pitcher Ryan Verdugo (9-3) sustained the loss, allowing five hits, three earned runs and three walks while fanning three.

LSU's 23-game winning streak was the longest in the nation this year and is an SEC record.
