IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine junior pitcher Scott Gorgen was selected in the fourth round (125 overall) Thursday by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Gorgen is 11-3 overall with a 2.31 ERA this season. He has 115 strikeouts in 109 innings and is holding the opposition to a .175 batting average.

The right-hander, who is a USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, was named to the Collegiate Baseball "Louisville Slugger" All-America first team this season. He also is a candidate for the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award.

Gorgen, a two-time All-Big West Conference first team selection, was named Big West tri-Pitcher of the Year this season.

He is scheduled to start Saturday against LSU in the opening game of the Baton Rouge Super Regional.
