IRVINE, Calif. --- Former UC Irvine baseball player Justin Cassel, currently with the Birmingham Barons, has been named to the Southern League All-Star team.

The Birmingham Barons, the double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, had six of its players named to the All-Star team. Cassel, tied for second in the league in wins with a 7-3 mark, sports a 3.29 ERA, which is just outside the league's top ten list. The right-hander earned league Pitcher of the Week honors on May 4 and had a stretch of 24.1 innings where he did not allow an earned run.

Bryan Petersen, currently of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, a class-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins is batting .294 with 18 home runs. Petersen has posted 78 hits, including nine doubles and a triple in 70 games and is second on the team with 50 RBI.

Blair Erickson, with the Fort Myers Miracle (class-A), an affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, is 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA. The right-hander has struck out 23 in 22.1 innings and allowed five runs while walking nine in 15 games.

Pitcher Wes Etheridge, of the West Virginia Power (class-A, Milwaukee) has registered four saves and fanned 23 in 22 innings. Etheridge has walked four while allowing 12 earned runs on 19 hits for a 4.91 ERA.

Outfielder Spike McDougall, playing with the Jupiter Hammerheads (class-A, Florida), is hitting .230 and has 54 hits and 34 RBI. McDougall has also recorded 14 doubles and five home runs on the season.

Pitcher Scott Gorgen has struck out 10 in nine innings for the Batavia Muckdogs (class-A short season, St. Louis Cardinals). The All-American has allowed two runs on five hits for a 2.00 ERA.


 

 

Catcher Aaron Lowenstein, playing for the AZL Giants (rookie league, San Francisco) is hitting .286 with four hits and four RBI.
