UCI Pitcher Bryce Stowell Named Coca-Cola Player of the WeekJuly 17, 2008
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine pitcher Bryce Stowell (La Habra/Pepperdine), currently playing for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League, improved to 2-0 after striking out eight in 8.1innings to earn Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week honors. Stowell came within two outs of a complete-game shutout to lead the Braves to a 2-0 victory over Wareham. The right-hander did not walk a batter while holding the Gatemen to just seven hits. Stowell boasts the league's lowest ERA at 0.36 and has amassed 31 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. He has walked just five while yielding 10 hits on the season. Teammate Eric Pettis (West Hills/El Camino Real HS) is also having a solid summer season, posting a 2-0 record and a 1.10 ERA. Pettis collected the win Wednesday against Wareham after pitching 1.1 innings of shutout relief. The right-hander has made 12 appearances, all in relief, and has fanned 16 in 16.1 innings. Pettis, who will be a junior this fall, has held the opposition to a run on nine hits while walking four. Cory Olson (Anaheim/Orange Coast College), who will join the Anteater program this fall, is batting .391 for the Chatham A's. The outfielder has recorded 27 hits in 18 games, including three doubles and a triple. Olson has also driven in seven and is second on the team with 16 runs scored. Scott Hong (Los Angeles/Palisades Charter HS) is batting .258 for the Hawaii Aliis. Hong has 16 hits and tops the team with five triples and eight stolen bases. He has drawn 12 walks while driving in eight in 18 games played. Pitcher Kyle Necke (Walnut/HS) sports a 1.50 ERA for the Green Bay Bullfrogs of the Northwoods League. Necke (0-2), who has made nine appearances has struck out 14 in 18 innings of work while walking just four and allowed three earned runs. Brian Hernandez, who will enter UC Irvine this fall, is batting .275 for the St. Cloud Riverbats. Hernandez is third on the team with a 138 at bats and has recorded 38 hits to sit second on the club. He is also second with seven doubles and 18 RBI. Pitcher Christian Bergman (Altadena/St. Francis HS) boasts a 3-1 record on the hill with a 0.99 ERA, fourth-best in the Alaska League. Bergman, playing for the Anchorage Bucs, has made five starts and hurled three complete games, including a complete-game shutout. The right-hander has struck out 27 in 45.2 innings while walking just three. Bergman has allowed five earned runs on 35 hits. Casey Stevenson (Saugus/College of the Canyons), also playing in the Alaska League, holds a .267 average for the Alaska Goldpanners. Stevenson has 20 hits on the season, including a team-high three triples. Stevenson also has five doubles and 11 RBI in 24 games played. Teammate Reid Suitor (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) is 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA in six appearances. The right-hander has pitched in two combined shutouts and recorded four strikeouts in nine innings of work. Suitor has allowed six earned runs on nine hits. Tony Asaro (Torrance/Pepperdine), playing for the Glacier Pilots (Alaska League) is batting .272 in 22 games. Tied for fourth with 14 RBI, Asaro also has posted 22 hits including a pair of doubles and a home run. |
