UC Irvine Defeats Cal Poly 73-69 Behind Lauer's Career-High 20 Points
Jan. 12, 2008
IRVINE, Calif. --- Junior guard Brett Lauer scored a career-high 20 points to lead UC Irvine over Cal Poly, 73-69, in a Big West Conference game Saturday night at the Bren Events Center. Senior forward Patrick Sanders added 18 points with 14 coming in the second half, and senior center Darren Fells recorded his second straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Anteaters improved to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in the conference. UCI, which is tied for third place in the Big West, has won all six games played on campus this season. After Cal Poly had cut the margin to 64-61, Lauer converted a four-point play with 2:03 remaining on a three-pointer from the right side and subsequent free throw. A basket by Lorenzo Keeler drew the Mustangs within 70-67 with 1:11 left, but Sanders, who scored 10 points in the final 6:45, nailed a right-side jumper with 12.2 seconds remaining to give the Anteaters a five-point cushion. Dawin Whiten led Cal Poly (6-10, 1-3) with 22 points, hitting 8 of 12 field goals, including 5 of 7 from three-point range. Chaz Thomas added 11 points and five assists. Chad DeCasas added 10 points for UCI while Kevin Bland had nine rebounds. Cal Poly shot 46.4 percent from the field and hit 11 of 28 threes for 39.3 percent. UCI, which out-rebounded the Mustangs 34-31, shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the game. UCI played its second straight game without guards Chuma Awaji and Trey Harris, who are sidelined indefinitely due to academic matters. The Anteaters play six of their next seven games on the road, beginning Thursday night at UC Davis at 7:00. UCI faces Pacific in Stockton next Saturday, also at 7:00 p.m. That game will be aired live on FSN Prime Ticket.
