FULLERTON, Calif. --- Orane Chin scored 23 points off the bench to lead Cal State Fullerton past UC Irvine, 74-68, in a Big West Conference game before 3,244 on Homecoming Saturday at Titan Gym.

Chin hit 7 of 11 field goals, 9 of 13 free throws and added eight rebounds. Jer'Vaughn Johnson and Devon Peltier scored 15 points for Fullerton, which improved to 10-10 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

UCI sophomore forward Eric Wise had his first double-double of the season and third of his career with 14 points and 13 boards. He also had four assists and two steals for the Anteaters, who lost their third straight game in falling to 9-13, 3-7.

Senior Michael Hunter led the `Eaters with 16 points, all in the second half. He hit 4 of 10 threes and has 213 in his career, 20 behind all-time UCI leader Ross Schraeder (233).

Junior guard Darren Moore added 13 points and six rebounds. Adam Folker and Zack Atkinson also pulled down six boards each.

The Titans led 33-29 at the half but UCI took a 53-50 lead on a layup by Wise with 11:16 left in the game.

Fullerton then regained the lead but the `Eaters pulled even at 61-61 on a steal and layup by Hunter at the 5:05 mark.

Chin put the Titans up for good at 63-61 on a basket with 4:04 remaining as he scored Fullerton's next seven points.

Hunter hit a pair of free throws to pull UCI within 71-68 with 20 seconds left but the Titans converted 3 of 4 free throws in the final seconds for the victory.

Fullerton hit 15 of 21 free throws in the second half and 16 of 24 for the game to UCI's 7 of 13.  The 'Eaters were 9 of 22 from three-point range and the Titans 8 of 18.  UCI won the battle of the boards, 42-32. 


 

 

"I liked our effort tonight," UCI head coach Pat Douglass said. "We played with a lot of energy but Fullerton is a good team that penetrates well and Chin was a big factor for them."

UCI travels to Cal State Bakersfield for a non-conference game Wednesday night at 7:00 and hosts the Roadrunners next Saturday in the Bren Center at 7:35 p.m.
