UCI Loses at Cal State Bakersfield, 68-55
Feb. 3, 2010 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- Trent Blakley scored 20 points and Santwon Latunde added 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cal State Bakersfield past UC Irvine, 68-55, in a non-conference game at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield Wednesday night. Eric Wise led UCI (9-14) with 18 points as the Anteaters lost their fourth straight game and have dropped seven of the past eight. Jonas Lalehzadeh had a career-high eight points and six rebounds for UCI, and Derrick Strings also scored eight points and had five boards. UCI, after taking a 17-13 lead on a jumper by Pavol Losonsky with 9:25 left in the first half, was outscored 15-4 as the Roadrunners (5-16) gained a 28-21 halftime lead. Bakersfield built a 47-34 lead on a three by Blakley with 10:19 remaining in the game, but the Anteaters went on a 14-4 run to close within 51-48 on a basket by Wise with 6:34 left. UCI was still within three at 53-50 on an alley-oop dunk by Zack Atkinson with 6:00 remaining but a layup by Latunde and another trey by Blakley put the Roadrunners up 58-50 and Bakersfield controlled the game down the stretch. The Roadrunners shot 46 percent from the field to UCI's 34.5 percent and Bakersfield outrebounded the Anteaters, 39-31. "We are a struggling ballclub but I give credit to the Roadrunners," said UCI head coach Pat Douglass, who coached 10 seasons (1987-97) at Bakersfield, winning NCAA Division II titles in 1993, 1994 and 1997. "It was a good win for Bakersfield - they played with a lot of heart," Douglass added. "We had some looks in the second half, cut it to three, but couldn't convert when we needed to. We didn't play with the type of quickness we needed.
"We are trying to get a win to gain some confidence." The same teams meet again Saturday night at 7:35 at the Bren Center in the second game of a doubleheader as the women's teams from the schools play at 5:00 p.m. |
