IRVINE, Calif. --- Eric Wise scored 21 points to lead UC Irvine past Cal State Bakersfield, 76-63, in a non-conference game at the Bren Center Saturday night.

Wise was 8 of 14 from the field and added seven rebounds and four assists.

Darren Moore added 16 points and tied his career high with nine rebounds as the Anteaters snapped a four-game losing streak in improving to 10-14 on the season. Michael Hunter scored 15 points, hitting 3 of 7 threes, and added four assists.

Zack Atkinson started at center and had six points, three rebounds and three blocked shots.

Donavan Bragg scored 25 points for Bakersfield (5-17) and Stephon Carter added 12.

UCI built a 33-22 halftime lead behind 11 points from Wise and 10 by Hunter.

A three-pointer by Moore with 14:20 left in the game gave the Anteaters their largest lead of the night at 48-28. The closest the Roadrunners could cut into the deficit was 11 at 52-41 on a three-point play by James Albright with 8:55 remaining.

UCI shot 44.8 percent from the field to Bakersfield's 32.1 percent. The game included 45 fouls and 58 free throws.

"Darren Moore gave us a lot of energy tonight," UCI head coach Pat Douglass said. "He played a heck of a game.

"Eric Wise started slow but he ended up with good numbers and Michael Hunter had kind of a quiet 15. We were able to get some transition baskets off our defensive play. It was a solid team effort."

 

 

The `Eaters return to Big West Conference play Wednesday night hosting Cal State Fullerton at 7:05. UCI entertains UC Davis next Saturday night, also at 7:05 in the Bren Center.
