'Eaters Fall to Cal State Fullerton, 72-61

IRVINE, Calif. --- Gerard Anderson and Orane Chin each recorded a double-double Wednesday night to lead Cal State Fullerton past UC Irvine, 72-61, in a Big West Conference game at the Bren Center.

Anderson had 19 points and 10 rebounds while Chin recorded 14 points and 10 boards off the bench. Anderson also had four assists.

Aaron Thompson scored 15 points for the Titans (12-11, 6-5 Big West), who outrebounded UCI 42-29 in completing a regular-season sweep of the Anteaters.

Eric Wise had 19 points and six rebounds for UCI (10-15, 3-8). Darren Moore added 14 points and Michael Hunter 13. Patrick Rembert scored nine points and had four assists while Zack Atkinson pulled down eight rebounds.

Fullerton led 28-24 at halftime but the Anteaters gained a 32-31 lead on a basket by Moore with 15:16 remaining in the game.

The Titans then went on a 20-7 run over the next 6 ½ minutes to take a 51-39 lead on a three-pointer by Thompson with 8:46 left and Fullerton maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

The Titans' bench outscored UCI's 22-4 in the contest.

"We played zone in the first half but couldn't make any buckets," UCI head coach Pat Douglass said. "We went man in the second half and couldn't stop their dribble penetration.

"Our bench did not perform well at all."

UCI hosts UC Davis Saturday night at 7:05 in a Big West game at the Bren Center.
