Rembert's Layup Lifts UC Irvine Over UC Davis, 69-67
Feb. 13, 2010
IRVINE, Calif. --- Patrick Rembert's driving left-side layup with nine seconds left was the game-winner as UC Irvine defeated UC Davis, 69-67, in a Big West Conference game at the Bren Center Saturday night.
Rembert's basket gave the Anteaters their first lead since the 14:45 mark of the second half as UCI improved to 11-15 overall and 4-8 in the Big West, snapping a four-game conference losing streak.
The Aggies were leading 67-60 on a jumper by Ryan Sypkens with 4:26 left but UCI scored the game's final nine points. Eric Wise made 1 of 2 free throws to cut the margin to 67-61 with 3:14 remaining and Michael Hunter converted a layup to pull the Anteaters within 67-63 with 2:57 left.
Wise hit his only field goal of the night with 2:01 remaining and Darren Moore hit two free throws at the 1:18 mark to tie the game.
Todd Lowenthal missed a jumper for UC Davis with 41 seconds remaining and the Anteaters used most of the shot clock before Rembert drove the lane for the winning basket.
Sypkens missed a three-pointer from the left side with three seconds left and UCI gathered the rebound for the victory, its first in the last five games with the Aggies.
Moore scored a career-high 21 points for the Anteaters and he tied his career highs with nine rebounds and four assists. He hit 4 of 6 threes and 7 of 8 free throws.
Hunter added 19 points for UCI, hitting 3 of 8 threes and 6 of 7 foul shots.
Rembert scored nine points and had five assists while Adam Folker came off the bench and recorded six points and seven rebounds. Wise, UCI's leading scorer who entered the game averaging 16.1 points, scored a season-low three due to foul trouble.
UC Davis put on a shooting exhibition in the first half, hitting 11 of 17 threes en route to a 45-40 lead at the break. The Aggies cooled off in the second half, hitting 3 of 11 from beyond the arc to finish the game at 14 of 28.
Dominic Calegari and Lowenthal led UC Davis (10-14, 6-6) with 13 points each while Sypkens and Julian Welch had 12 apiece.
UCI, which hit 8 of 16 threes for the game, outrebounded the Aggies, 35-27, including a 23-9 advantage in the second half.
"Darren Moore played an outstanding game and Michael Hunter kept us in the game early," UCI head coach Pat Douglass said. "Adam Folker played a good game off the bench and did a nice job on Calegari in the second half, and I thought Emil Kim gave us some quality minutes.
"We started off in a zone but Davis kept hitting their threes. Even though we don't match up well with them, we had to play man in the second half and I was pleased with our defensive effort, especially in the last 10 minutes of the game," Douglass added.
UCI travels to UC Riverside Wednesday night for a 7:00 game at the Student Rec. Center. The Anteaters are one game ahead of the Highlanders for eighth place in the Big West.
