UC Irvine Loses at UC Riverside, 74-57

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Kyle Austin and Larry Gurganious each recorded a double-double in leading UC Riverside past UC Irvine, 74-57, in a Big West Conference game at Riverside Wednesday night.
Austin scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds while Gurganious registered 12 points and 13 boards for the Highlanders (10-15, 4-9), who pulled into an eighth-place tie in the conference with the Anteaters (11-16, 4-9). Austin had 13 points and 10 rebounds in the second half.
Eric Wise led UCI with 22 points while Darren Moore added 10 points and tied his career high with nine rebounds.
Riverside out-rebounded the Anteaters, 47-31, as the Highlanders pulled down 20 offensive boards to 10 for UCI. Austin had seven rebounds off the offensive glass and Gurganious six.
The Highlanders, who led 32-25 at halftime, hit 21 of 28 free throws in the second half and 24 of 36 for the game. UCI was 12 of 20 from the foul line.
UCI never led in the game and the closest the Anteaters came in the second half was 36-30 on a three-pointer by Moore with 18:32 left.
Riverside then scored the next nine points to go up 45-30 on a layup by Austin at the 15:23 mark and the Highlanders maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
Both teams had single-digit turnovers with UCI committing eight and Riverside seven. The Anteaters shot 38 percent from the field and the Highlanders 39 percent.
UCI hosts Marist Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in a BracketBusters non-conference game at the Bren Center.
