`EATERS FACE HIGHLANDERS WEDNESDAY NIGHT: UC Irvine travels to UC Riverside for a Big West Conference game Wednesday night at the Student Recreation Center.

The Anteaters are 4-8 in the conference following a 69-67 home win over UC Davis Saturday.

The Highlanders are 3-9 in the league after an 87-84, double overtime loss at home to Cal Poly Saturday evening.

UCI hosts Cal State Northridge (4-7 in the Big West) Feb. 27 before ending regular-season play on the road at UC Santa Barbara Mar. 3 and Cal Poly Mar. 6.

UC Riverside has three Big West road games left after Wednesday --- at Pacific Feb. 25, UC Davis Feb. 28 and Long Beach State Mar. 5.

Cal State Northridge, which hosts Cal Poly Wednesday, has road games at UC Santa Barbara Feb. 24 and UCI Feb. 27 before closing out at home against UC Davis Mar. 4 and Pacific Mar. 6.

MARIST IS BRACKETBUSTER FOE: UCI will host Marist Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the Bren Center as part of the BracketBusters series.

This will be the first meeting between the programs. As part of the series' contract, UCI must play a return game versus the Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. within the next two seasons.

`EATER NOTES

PAT TIES BOYD: Last Saturday's 69-67 win over UC Davis snapped a four-game Big West losing streak for UCI and gave head coach Pat Douglass his 194th career win with the Anteaters. That mark ties him with former Fresno State coach Boyd Grant for fifth all-time in victories with a Big West school.

MOORE'S IMPRESSIVE RUN: Junior guard Darren Moore, in the last three games, has averaged 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 51.6 percent (16 of 31) from the field.

He scored a career-high 21 points and made a career-high four three-pointers Saturday's 69-67 victory over UC Davis. He tied his career highs with nine rebounds and four assists.

In the past nine games, Moore has averaged 12.9 points and 5.9 boards.

He ranks sixth in the Big West in free-throw percentage (.750) and is ninth in steals (1.19 per game).

RAMBO'S AMAZING BALL CONTROL: Junior guard Patrick Rembert has 34 assists and just six turnovers in the last 10 games, covering 276 minutes of playing time. That is an average of one turnover per 46 minutes of action.

Rembert, who made the game-winning layup with nine seconds left in Saturday's win over UC Davis, ranks second in the conference in Big West games only with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.92.

ZACK LEADS BIG WEST IN BLOCKED SHOTS: Senior center Zack Atkinson leads the Big West in blocked shots with 30 for a 1.25 average. He has recorded at least three blocks in five games this season.

Atkinson hit 3 of 4 field goals against UC Davis Saturday and is shooting 53.3 percent for the season.

HUNTER CLOSING IN ON SCHRAEDER, GLOGER: Senior guard Michael Hunter ranks in the top 10 of three UC Irvine career categories.

He is second in three-point field goals (221), third in steals (155) and 10th in assists (283).

Ross Schraeder (2002-06) is the UCI leader in threes with 233 and Jeff Gloger (2002-05) tops the career list with 167 steals.

Mike Hess ranks ninth at UCI with 285 career assists.

13TH IN CAREER SCORING: Hunter, who scored 19 points in Saturday's win over UC Davis, is 13th at UCI with 1,229 career points, 15 behind No. 12 Mike Heckman (1,244). Hunter needs 23 more points to crack UCI's career top 10 in scoring. He tied his career high with six rebounds in Saturday's victory.

EYE OF THE HUNTER: Hunter ranks first in the Big West in free-throw percentage (.881), third in three-point field goals made per game (2.50), seventh in steals (1.42) and 10th in scoring (13.).

Hunter has made 29 of his last 31 foul shots and 36 of his last 39.

WISE IS A TOP-10 FIXTURE: Sophomore forward Eric Wise, who is averaging 15.6 points and 6.0 rebounds this season, has accumulated 839 points and 341 rebounds in his young career.

He ranks fourth in the Big West in assist/turnover ratio (1.53) and assists (3.23), fifth in scoring (15.6), eighth in rebounding (6.0), ninth in free-throw percentage (.701) and 10th in field-goal percentage (.449).

Wise, despite a season-low three points in Saturday's win over UC Davis, has eight 20-point games this season, and 14 in his career. He has 44 double-digit performances in 57 career games.

FOLKER RE-EMERGES: Sophomore forward Adam Folker had six points and seven rebounds in 20 reserve minutes of Saturday's win over UC Davis. That was his highest point total in the last seven games and the most boards in the past eight contests.

ABOUT UC RIVERSIDE: Third-year head coach Jim Wooldridge's Highlanders are 9-15 overall and 3-9 in the Big West.

Junior forward Kyle Austin leads the Big West in scoring at 18.4 points per game, scoring 74 points in his last two games.

The Highlanders defeated UCI, 65-56, at the Bren Center Jan. 23 as UCR closed the game on a 13-4 run in the final four minutes.

Dwight Gordon scored 19 points off the bench to lead the Highlanders and Austin netted 18.

Michael Hunter scored 20 for UCI and Eric Wise added 14.

IN THE NCAA STATS: As of Monday, UC Irvine ranks 44th (of 334 teams) in NCAA Division I in fewest turnovers per game at 12.1. Houston is first with an average of 9.0 per contest.

The `Eaters are 62nd in free-throw percentage (.721) and 66th in turnover margin (2.0).

IN THE BIG WEST RANKINGS: UCI leads the Big West Conference in free-throw percentage at .721 and turnover margin (+1.96).

ON THIS DATE:

Twenty years ago Wednesday night (Feb. 17, 1990), Ricky Butler made two free throws with 20 seconds left to give UCI a 98-97 victory at UC Santa Barbara before 5,395 at the Thunderdome.

The Anteaters shot 70.4 percent in the second half and scored 55 points in the final 20 minutes.

Dylan Rigdon led UCI with 24 points, hitting 6 of 8 threes. Butler and Jeff Herdman scored 22 points apiece.

Carrick DeHart led UCSB with 30 points.
