2009-10 Season in Review

UC Irvine finished the 2009-10 season 14-18 overall after falling to Cal Poly, 73-69, in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament March 10 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The `Eaters entered the tourney as the league's No. 7 seed.

HUNTER ENDS IMPRESSIVE CAREER: Senior guard Michael Hunter ended his career ranked No. 1 in UCI career three-pointers with 236.

He is third in steals (160), seventh in assists (298) and ninth in scoring with 1,308 points.

TALENTED 5'S: Hunter and Jerry Green (1998-2002) are the only UCI players to rank in the top 10 of each of those four categories. Both wore jersey No. 5.

BIG WEST LEADER: Hunter ranked first in the Big West in free-throw percentage (.871), second in three-point field goals made per game (2.50), seventh in steals (1.31) and 11th in scoring (13.8).

THE WISE IMPACT: Sophomore forward Eric Wise, who averaged 16.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, had 12 20-point games this season and 18 in his career. He has 50 double-figure scoring performances in 63 career games.

In the last six games of the season, Wise averaged 19.3 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Wise became just the second player in UCI history (and the first in 37 years) to lead the team in scoring, rebounding and assists.

Dave Baker was the first player to accomplish the feat in 1972-73 (15.3 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 2.3 apg).

Wise ranked fourth in the Big West in scoring (16.3), fifth in assists (3.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.45), seventh in offensive rebounds (2.28) and eighth in rebounding (6.5).

He recorded his fourth double-double of the season (and sixth of his career) with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Big West Tournament loss to Cal Poly.

Wise has accumulated 955 points and 392 rebounds in the first two years of his career. He has career averages of 15.2 points and 6.2 rebounds.

STRONG FINISH FOR MOORE: Junior guard Darren Moore averaged 15.9 points and 6.8 rebounds in the season's final nine games. He led UCI with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting in the season-ending loss to Cal Poly.

He scored a career-high 24 points in the March 6 overtime win at Cal Poly, hitting two threes in the final nine seconds of regulation.

He ranked seventh in the Big West in free-throw percentage at .758.

RAMBO'S CONTROL: Junior guard Patrick Rembert had 14 assists and just three turnovers in 111 minutes of playing time over the season's last three games.

He ranks second in the Big West in assist/turnover ratio (2.45) for league games and was third in assists for conference games at 3.38 per contest, and in free-throw percentage at .825.

Rembert, who made the game-winning layup with nine seconds left in the Feb. 13 win over UC Davis, scored a career-high 20 points in the March 6 overtime win at Cal Poly, hitting 9 of 10 free throws.

ZACK 3RD IN BIG WEST IN BLOCKED SHOTS: Senior center Zack Atkinson tied his career high with four blocked shots in the Big West Tournament loss to Cal Poly. He had eight points and four rebounds in the game.

He ranked third in the Big West in blocked shots with 39 for a 1.30 average. He has recorded at least three blocks in six games this season.

Atkinson shot 52.5 percent from the field.

IN THE BIG WEST STATS: UC Irvine ranked first in the Big West in turnover margin at +1.91. The `Eaters were second in free-throw percentage (.723) and assist/turnover ratio (1.14).

END OF THE DOUGLASS ERA: The contract for head coach Pat Douglass was not renewed following the season.

He had a record of 197-191 in 13 seasons at UCI.
