Bracket Revised for Great Alaska Shootout

June 8, 2011

IRVINE, Calif. --- The bracket has been revised for the 2011 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, announced by Dr. Steve Cobb, University of Alaska Anchorage athletic director.

Coach Russell Turner's UC Irvine squad will now open against Southern Mississippi on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24) with the game time to be announced later. The `Eaters were originally scheduled to face Murray State Nov. 23.

Central Michigan and New Mexico State are also on UCI's side of the bracket.

"We are excited for the opportunity to play in the Great Alaska Shootout and we know that there is excellent competition in this field for our young team," Turner said.

"The opportunity for our players to visit Alaska is special and we are excited to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday together, and hopeful that our fans will enjoy the chance to see us play on television."

Southern Miss is coached by Larry Eustachy, who previously faced the Anteaters in the Big West Conference as the head coach at Utah State, and he also has coached at Idaho and Iowa State.

Alaska Anchorage is the host for the 34th annual tournament with the remainder of the field including Dartmouth, Murray State and San Francisco.

The Shootout is the longest-running regular-season college basketball tournament in the nation, taking place every Thanksgiving week in Anchorage since 1978.
