UC IRVINE OPENS REGULAR SEASON: UC Irvine opens its 45th season of men's basketball this weekend with a Friday night home game against the University of La Verne and a Sunday afternoon contest at third-ranked Texas.

The La Verne game is the only home contest for UCI before the Dec. 2 encounter with Hawaii.

RADIO COVERAGE: All UCI games this season will be carried live on KUCI/88.9 FM with Mark Roberts returning for his 16th season as the voice of the Anteaters.

LOOKING AHEAD: The `Eaters travel to Loyola Marymount Wednesday (Nov. 18) for an 8:00 p.m. game that will be televised on FSN PRIME TICKET.

WISE NAMED TO ALL-BIG WEST PRESEASON TEAM: Sophomore forward Eric Wise was selected to the 2009-10 All-Big West Conference preseason team by the media.

Wise averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds last season when he was named to the All-Big West Second and Freshman teams.

His father, Francois Wise, is a former All-American player at Long Beach State and his uncle, Willie Wise, was a standout in the ABA in the 1970s.

COACH DOUGLASS: Pat Douglass, who is in his 13th season as head coach at UC Irvine in 2009-10, is the longest-tenured and winningest coach in the 44-year history of the Anteater program.

He has compiled an Anteater record of 183-173 in 12 years. Douglass passed previous UCI leader Bill Mulligan (163 wins) in a 74-59 victory over Pacific Feb. 14, 2008.

Douglass leads all Big West Conference coaches with 559 victories at the four-year collegiate level. In his 28 seasons in the four-year ranks, he is 559-292.

ABOUT LA VERNE: Third-year head coach Richard Reed's Leopards defeated the Afghanistan National Team, 73-66, last Sunday.

Sophomore forward Austin Napolitano scored 21 points and added eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Trevor Woodland scored 17 points and sophomore guard John Leggett 14.

La Verne was 6-19 overall last season.

ABOUT TEXAS: Twelfth-year head coach Rick Barnes' Longhorns are ranked No. 3 in the nation entering the season.

UT returns four starters and eight of its top 10 scorers from last year's squad that was 23-12 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Senior swingman Damion James averaged 15.4 points and 9.2 rebounds last season. He enters this season just 110 rebounds shy of the becoming UT's career leader.

Senior center Dexter Pittman averaged 10.1 points and 5.5 boards last season. Junior forward Gary Johnson posted averages of 10.0 points and 5.3 rebounds.

The game versus Texas is a Regional Round matchup in the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.

UCI travels to Richmond, Ky., Nov. 23-25 for Sub-regional action, facing in order, UTSA, Eastern Kentucky and Fairleigh Dickinson.
