UC IRVINE, UCLA MEET THURSDAY NIGHT: UC Irvine takes on UCLA Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion in the eighth meeting of the series.

Coach Russell Turner's `Eaters, 6-5 overall, have won six of their last nine games but are coming off a 76-69 loss at Pepperdine Saturday night.

Despite shooting a season-low 31.1 percent from the field for the game, including 5 of 29 (.172) on threes, UCI (6-5) traded leads with the Waves (5-8) during the second half. The Anteaters had hit 48.5 percent of their threes in the previous five games entering Saturday's contest.

Anteater senior guard Darren Moore scored a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior backcourt mate Patrick Rembert recorded the first double-double of his career with 10 points and 11 rebounds, plus he led the team with four assists.

Pavol Losonsky, Daman Starring, Derrick Strings and Chris McNealy added eight points each.

Junior forward Eric Wise, who had six points, became the 20th player in UCI history to reach 1,000 career points as he now has 1,002.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: Eight UCI players are averaging at least 6.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

Seven players are averaging at least 21 minutes of action with 10 averaging at least 11 minutes per game.

PACE PICKS UP: In the last six games, UCI has outscored the opposition, 81.3 to 71.7.

MAY I BORROW THAT? The `Eaters have 52 steals in those six contests to the opponents' 34.

PLAYER NOTES

....Senior guard Darren Moore leads UCI in scoring (16.9), rebounding (7.0), steals (24) and field-goal percentage (.536) through the season's first 11 games.

He scored a career-high 30 points, hitting 9 of 9 shots, in the 90-82 win at San Diego Dec. 1 when he added 11 rebounds. Moore has three double-doubles this season.

....Senior point guard Patrick Rembert leads the `Eaters with 33 assists and he is second in scoring with a 12.4 average. Rembert has made 30 of 38 (.789) free throws this season.

He had the first double-double of his career with 10 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday's loss to Pepperdine.

....Junior forward Eric Wise became the 20th player in UCI history to reach 1,000 career points after scoring six in last Saturday's loss at Pepperdine. Wise has scored 1,002 points in 68 career games along with grabbing 416 rebounds.

Wise, a member of the All-Big West Conference preseason team, missed five games this season with a hip injury sustained in the USC game Nov. 13.

He is averaging 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in four games this season.

....Sophomore swingman Daman Starring, a transfer from Centenary College, has hit 19 of 32 (.594) field goals in the past four games. He has averaged 13.5 points over those four contests.

....Senior post Pavol Losonsky has started each of the first 11 games and is averaging 7.5 points, scoring in double figures four times. Losonsky is averaging 4.3 rebounds per game and tied his season high with eight in the win over Vanguard last Wednesday (Dec. 15).

....Freshman guard Chris McNealy scored a career-high 16 points against Vanguard Dec. 15, connecting on 6 of 8 field goals. He is averaging 7.5 points and 2.8 rebounds.

His father, Chris, was a two-time, All-Big West first team player at San Jose State (1982 & 1983) who played three seasons with the New York Knicks (1985-88).

....Sophomore Mike Wilder has grabbed 53 rebounds in his past eight games for a 6.6 average. He has hit 24 of 28 (.857) free throws in that span. Wilder recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the Dec. 4 loss to San Jose State. He is averaging 6.9 points and 5.6 rebounds for the season.

....Junior guard Derrick Strings is 14 of 30 on threes in the last six games.  He scored a career-high 17 points in the 77-56 win at Marist Nov. 27.

....Senior center Peter Simek snared a career-high eight boards and added six points in the Dec. 15 win over Vanguard. He recorded two assists, the first of his UCI career, in the victory. He has hit 50 percent of his field-goal attempts this season and he is 15 of 24 (.625) from the floor in the past eight games.

....Senior swing Emil Kim scored a career-high 15 points in 15 reserve minutes of the Dec. 15 win over Vanguard, hitting 5 of 8 from the floor.

....Sophomore guard Derick Flowers had a career-high three assists in the Dec. 15 win over Vanguard and he tied his season high with four points.

....Junior guard Jonas Lalehzadeh made his first appearance of the season Dec. 15 against Vanguard and registered four points and five rebounds in 14 minutes.

....Senior post Adam Folker has missed the first 11 games with a broken right hand sustained in the Nov. 5 exhibition game against Concordia. Folker had 12 rebounds in UCI's two exhibition contests.

IN THE BIG WEST: UCI leads the Big West Conference in scoring offense at 75.8 points per game and also tops the league in scoring margin (+4.5) and field-goal percentage defense (.399).

Darren Moore leads the conference in steals at 2.18 per game and he is third in scoring (16.9) and field-goal percentage (.536), and fifth in rebounding (6.9).

Patrick Rembert (.474) and Derrick Strings (.457) rank third and fourth, respectively, in three-point field goal percentage.

Mike Wilder is fourth in the Big West in free-throw percentage at .857.

IN THE NCAA STATS: Entering the week, Darren Moore ranked 44th in the nation in steals at 2.18 per game and 69th in field-goal percentage (.536).

Of 336 teams ranked nationally, UCI was 50th in three-point field goal percentage defense at .297 and 59th in three-point field goal percentage (.382).

BIG WEST OPENER TUESDAY: UC Irvine opens its Big West Conference schedule hosting UC Riverside next Tuesday (Dec. 28) in the Bren Center at 7:00 p.m.

The `Eaters host Loyola Marymount Dec. 30 in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m., then begin the remainder of their Big West schedule Jan. 5 against Cal State Fullerton in the Bren at 7:00 p.m.

ABOUT UCLA: Eighth-year head coach Ben Howland's Bruins are 7-4 entering Thursday night's game after a 75-59 win over Montana State Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Tyler Honeycutt leads UCLA in scoring and rebounding at 14.9 points and 8.0 boards per game. Sophomore forward Reeves Nelson is averaging 14.7 points and 7.8 rebounds.

The Bruins, who have won their last four games, defeated then-No. 16 BYU, 86-79, in the Wooden Classic at the Honda Center last Saturday. Nelson scored 23 points and Honeycutt added 17 in the win.

UC IRVINE VS. THE PAC-10: The Anteaters are 10-31 all-time versus Pac-10 schools, with five wins each at home and on the road. UCI`s last victory over a Pac-10 team was a 79-63 win at then-No. 13 Stanford Nov. 19, 2005. The Anteaters lost at USC, 62-49, Nov.13.
