STANFORD, Calif. --- UC Irvine had a strong showing in the U.S. Intercollegiate tournament, finishing fifth of 17 teams in the event that concluded Sunday at the Stanford University Golf Course.

The tournament featured eight teams ranked in Golfstat's top 45 this week.

USC won the 54-hole tourney with a total of 828. Stanford was second at 841, California and UCLA tied for third at 857 and UCI shot 861.

USC's Rory Hie was medalist with a three-round score of 10-under 200 after a 67 in the final round.

Sophomore John Chin also shot a 3-under 67 Sunday to lead the Anteaters with a seventh-place finish of 211.

Junior Tim Cha, with a 68 in the last round, placed 11th at 212 and senior Kenny Kim, with a 71 Sunday, finished 17th at 215.

Junior Sean Shahi (74) was 41st at 223 and senior Derek Uyesaka (81) placed 87th at 250.

Coach Paul Smolinski's UCI squad opens defense of its league title Monday in the Big West Conference Championships at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita. The 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday.
