UC Irvine Climbs to Third Place at NCAA East Regional
May 16, 2008 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- UC Irvine made a big move Friday in the second round of the NCAA East Regional, climbing 10 spots to tie for third entering Saturday's final round at Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. Coach Paul Smolinski's Anteaters shot a 9-under total of 275 Friday and are tied for third place with Auburn at 558 after two rounds. Georgia, the nation's top-ranked team, fired a 13-under 271 and leads the regional at 32-under par 536. Augusta State is second at 555 in the 27-team field. UCI, ranked 46th in the nation, leads 13 teams ranked higher in the nation's top 50. The top 10 teams following Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championship May 28-31 on The Kampen Course at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. UCI junior Sean Shahi carded a 6-under 65 Friday and is tied for fourth at 7-under 135 following 36 holes. Sophomore John Chin shot a 2-under 69 and is eighth at 6-under 136. Senior Kenny Kim also shot a 69 and is in 25th place at 140. Junior Tim Cha, with a 72, is 89th at 147 and freshman Max Greil shot 78, putting him 130th at 153. Zach Sucher of Alabama-Birmingham shot a 9-under 62 and leads at 11-under 131. Georgia's Hudson Swafford is second at 9-under 133.
