UC Irvine in 8th Place at Topy Cup

TANAGURA, Japan --- UC Irvine is in eighth place after the second day of competition Wednesday in the 26th annual Topy Cup at Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan. The Anteaters shot 297 and have a 36-hole total of 593. Three-time defending champion Tohoku Fukushi University leads the 10-team field with a two-round score of 553 after shooting a 20-under team total of 268 Wednesday. Lamar University is second at 573 and Nihon University is third at 575. Yoshinori Fujimoto of Tohoku Fukushi fired an 8-under 64 in the second round to seize the individual lead at 10-under 134, four shots ahead of Lamar's Leroux Ferreira (138). UCI junior John Chin is in ninth place at 1-under 143 after a 2-under round of 70 Wednesday. Freshman Michael Im, after a 75 in the second round, is 19th at 147. Senior Sean Shahi (77) is 35th at 150, sophomore Bryan Harris (75) is 40th at 153 and senior Cean Hayashi Geronimo (82) is 58th at 163. The tournament, which features four American schools and six Japanese universities, is scheduled to conclude with the final round on Thursday.
