NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. --- UC Irvine's Tim Cha earned a spot in next month's U.S. Amateur Championship by winning the sectional qualifying tournament Monday at Big Canyon Country Club, firing rounds of 68-65 for an 11-under total of 133.

Cha finished nine shots ahead of runner-up Stewart Hagestad, who had rounds of 70-72 for 142. Hagestad and Matt Grush (72-73) earned the other two qualifying spots for the U.S. Amateur.

Cha, who as a junior finished third in this year's Big West Conference Championship and earned first team all-league honors, joins UCI teammate John Chin in competing at the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 18-24 at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort & Country Club. Chin gained an automatic berth for the U.S. Amateur by reaching the finals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship earlier this month.

Sean Shahi, who will be a senior at UCI this fall, finished sixth (74-74) in Monday's qualifier.
