UCI's Tim Cha, John Chin Complete Play at U.S. Amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. --- UC Irvine's Tim Cha and John Chin each shot 1-over 71 Tuesday but will not advance to match play in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. The Anteater duo tied for 109th place with 36-hole scores of 7-over 147 (76-71) in the field that consisted of 315 players. Both played the par-70 Pinehurst No. 4 Tuesday. Former UCI standout Brian Edick also did not advance, shooting a 9-over 79 Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 4 and finishing 282nd at 16-over 156. Robbie Fillmore of Provo, Utah, shot a 5-under 65 Tuesday and placed first in stroke play with a 6-under score of 134 as he leads the low 64 scorers into the beginning of match play Wednesday. Chin, who will be a junior at UCI this year, leads an Anteater contingent that will compete in the 26th Topy Cup at Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan, Sept. 9-11. Joining the `Eaters are American teams Charlotte, Lamar and New Mexico in the tournament that includes eight Japanese schools. Chin was 2008 Big West Conference medalist and Player of the Year. He finished runner-up in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in July. Cha, a 2008 All-Big West first team selection, has one year of eligibility remaining and is expected to redshirt this season.
