UC Irvine Competes at Saint Mary's Invitational

UCI SET TO COMPETE AT POPPY HILLS: Coach Paul Smolinski's UC Irvine men's golf team competes in the Saint Mary's College Invitational Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 29-30) at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach. Thirty-six holes are scheduled for Monday with the final 18 on Tuesday. UCI's lineup is slated to be Sean Shahi, John Chin, Bryan Harris, Max Greil and Roberto Francioni, Joining UCI and Saint Mary's in the 16-team field are Akron, Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, Notre Dame, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Texas-Arlington and Wisconsin. `EATERS FINISH 7TH AT TOPY CUP: UC Irvine finished seventh in the 26th annual Topy Cup that concluded Sept. 11 at Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan. The Anteaters shot a 4-under total of 284 in the final round and had a 54-hole total of 877. Tohoku Fukushi University won its fourth consecutive Topy Cup title with a final tally of 29-under 835 over three rounds. Lamar University was second (855) and Nihon University third (857) in the 10-team field that featured four American schools and six Japanese universities. UCI's John Chin and Sean Shahi each shot 2-under rounds of 70 in the final round. Chin finished ninth in the tournament with a 54-hole score of 3-under 213 while Shahi was 22nd at 220.
Sophomore Bryan Harris carded a 1-under 71 in the last round, senior Cean Hayashi Geronimo a 73 and freshman Michael Im 76. Im finished 28th overall with a three-round total of 223, Harris was 31st at 224 and Geronimo 53rd at 236. Yoshinori Fujimoto of Tohoku Fukushi shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to claim medalist honors with a total of 14-under 202, seven shots ahead of runner-up Yuuki Ito from Nihon University. UCI AVERAGES: John Chin leads UCI with a 71.00 average, Sean Shahi follows at 73.33 and Michael Im is third at 74.33. Bryan Harris averaged 74.67 per round in the season's first tournament and Cean Hayashi Geronimo 78.67. |
