Ibarra, Fontein Get the Call
IRVINE, Calif. --- Two Anteaters were selected in the MLS Supplemental Draft on Tuesday, midfielder Miguel Ibarra (Lancaster / Taft College) and goalkeeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS).
Ibarra went eighth in the second round to the Portland Timbers. The Co-Offensive Big West Player of the Year and Big West Tournament MVP went 27th overall and was among five other Big West players to be taken in that round.
Here is a look at Ibarra in action at the MLS Player Combine.
Fontein was quickly snapped up in the third round with the second pick of the round by the Vancouver Whitecaps. Between the SuperDraft and the Supplemental Draft, Fontein was the fifth goalkeeper taken overall with three of the previous picks having gone to the player combine.
Ibarra and Fontein are the 11th and 12th ever MLS draftees from UC Irvine, respectively. They join Anthony Hamilton as the only 'Eaters to go in the Supplemental Draft. The draft has changed throughout the years with this year being the first in which the SuperDraft was two rounds and the Supplemental Draft was four rounds. In previous years, the SuperDraft had been four or five rounds.
Both players will report to their respective camps for an opportunity to make their squad's final roster before the season opens in early March.
