LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- UC Irvine showed no fear as it marched into the home of 16th-ranked Louisville as it completely dismantled the Cardinals in a 1-0 victory Friday night at Cardinal Park. The win lifted UCI to 3-3 all-time on Friday the 13th while also avenging its loss at the hands of the Cardinals in the same stadium just one year ago.
Lester Hayes III provided the crushing blow in the 69th minute. The junior attacker led the Anteater onslaught all night leading the team with four of its 14 shots turning two of them on net.
UCI (3-1-1) burned Louisville in the shot department to the tune of 14-4 with seven in each half. The takeover began midway through the first half as the 'Eaters would put a run of 11 consecutive shots off culminating in the Hayes III goal in the 69th minute.
Hayes III's goal evens him with Enrique Cardenas with two on the season as they share the team lead. Michael Breslin stood tall in net needing to stop just one shot to pick up his third win and shutout for 2013.
For UC Irvine, it marks the 11th win over a top-20 opponent in program history and the first outside the state of California. It's also the first over a ranked opponent since the 2011 season.
The Cardinals, who earlier in the season defeated 20th-ranked Virginia, have dropped its second straight match and now stand at 2-2.
UCI is now 2-1 on its current road trip, 1-1 on the week, and have one final match before heading home which comes Sunday, Sept. 15 at No. 20 Indiana starting at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time.
