IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's soccer team (1-0) defeated Gonzaga 1-0 Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Anteater Stadium.

 

The Anteaters broke the scoreless tie in the 86th minute as freshman Adrian Burgess crossed the ball into the box where freshman Spencer Thompson tapped the ball over to freshman Amani Walker who put the ball away at the 85:49 mark. Walker checked back into the match less than a minute before scoring the game-winning goal.

 


 

 

Freshman keeper Pat Barton had four saves for the Anteaters as he earned the shutout in his first career match. Keeper Vito Higgins had three saves for Gonzaga.

 

The win is the 100th win at UCI for Anteater head coach George Kuntz.

 

The Anteaters will next host Long Island Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Anteater Stadium.
