No. 8 Anteaters Fall 3-2 to DePaul

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The No. 8 UC Irvine men’s soccer team (3-1) lost 3-2 to DePaul Friday afternoon in the Marquette Invitational at Valley Fields.

Senior Carlos Aguilar (Palmdale/Taft College) collected a deflection off the goalkeeper and put it in from eight yards out to give UCI a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. In the 30th minute, DePaul committed a foul inside the 18-yard box giving UCI a penalty kick. Junior Amani Walker (San Diego/Francis Parker HS) took the kick and converted it for a 2-0 UCI lead. The Blue Demons cut the lead to 2-1 as Steffen Vroom beat a defender and put inside the lower right post in the 47th minute. Peter Sterbenz got a rebound off a cross by Willy Lara and knocked it in tying the match at 2-2 at the 51:13 mark. Mark Plotkin had a shot blocked and had the rebound collected by teammate Matt Leinauer who found the net to put DePaul up 3-2 in the 58th minute.

Sophomore keeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) had three saves in the match for UCI. Keeper Joe Ferrari had five saves for DePaul.

The ‘Eaters will conclude the Marquette Invitational Sunday as they face host Marquette at 12:05 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.
