IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's soccer team (6-3-4, 1-2-2) tied Cal Poly (9-1-2, 4-0-2) 1-1 after two overtime periods Saturday night in Big West Conference play at Anteater Stadium.

 

The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead as Kyle Montgomery scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway goal down the right side of the field at the 7:14 mark. The Anteaters were awarded a free kick from 30 yards out with five seconds remaining in the second half following the second yellow card given to Mario Fernandez. Junior Matt Murphy took the kick and knocked it over the keeper into the right side of the net with two seconds left in regulation to tie the match and send it into overtime.

 


 

 

The Anteaters and Mustangs each played with 10 players for the two overtime periods with UCI playing a man down for the final 15 minutes of the second half after junior Kyle Schmid was given a red card. Neither team was able to get another over the goal line as the `Eaters and Mustangs played to a 1-1 draw.

 

Freshman keeper Pat Barton had four saves for the `Eaters. Keeper Eric Branagan-Franco had four saves for Cal Poly. The Anteaters had five more shots than the Mustangs in regulation.

 

The Anteaters return to action Wednesday as they host UC Riverside at 7:00 p.m. in Big West play at Anteater Stadium.
