IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's soccer team (6-7-5, 1-6-3) tied UC Riverside 1-1 in double overtime Tuesday night in Big West Conference play at Anteater Stadium.

 

The Highlanders were down to 10 players following a red card given to Andrew Villalobos in the 24th minute. The Anteaters were unable to capitalize in the first half and had one of their first half shots go off the crossbar and another go off the left post.

 

In the second half, UCI took a 1-0 lead in the 88th minute as freshman Indar Smith crossed the ball to junior Shane Westbrook who knocked it in. Just over a minute later with the clock winding down, UCR had keeper Charles Alamo push up into the offensive zone and used the added pressure to even the match at 1-1. Brandon Plummer crossed the ball to Joel Crompton inside the box with 59 seconds remaining to send the match into overtime. Westbrook was given a red card with 33 seconds remaining to put the teams back on an even playing field.


 

 

 

The two teams played 10 on 10 for the two overtime periods with neither able to get another ball into the net to end in a 1-1 draw.

 

Freshman keeper Pat Barton had two saves in the match, with both coming in the second overtime period to preserve the tie. Keeper Charles Alamo had eight saves for UCR.

 

The match was the school record eighth overtime match of the year for the `Eaters.

 

The Anteaters return to action Friday as they travel to Northridge to take on Cal State Northridge at 2:00 p.m. in Big West Conference play at Matador Soccer Field.
