Five Anteaters, Top Freshman on Men's Tennis All-Big West

99th-ranked Fabian Matthews made the list three times.

IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI had a total of six selections on the All-Big West team including two first-teamers and the Freshman of the Year.

Sam Gould and Fabian Matthews continued their assault on the All-Big West singles section. Each made the first team for the third time as an Anteater joining Jonathan Endrikat as the only players to do that. Matthews, who went 20-9, 12-8 as UCI's No. 1, and finished ranked 99th in the nation, earned All-Big West honors for the fourth time. In 2011, he made the second team, but he joins Victor Lamm as the only four-time recipients. Gould's 14-12 season saw him go 11-9 as the No. 2 and end on an impressive 10-1 run.

Matthews and Gould were both also represented on the doubles side. Matthews actually made the doubles list twice along with Ryan Cheung on the second team and Shuhei Shibahara as honorable mention. Matthews is the third player to make the doubles list twice in the same year joining Jonathan Endrikat and Brian Morton who both did it in 2004. Matthews and Cheung become the fourth pair to be named All-Big West doubles twice after they were named to the second team in 2011. Shibahara earns his first ever All-Big West selection as a freshman. He and Matthews went a perfect 7-0 to finish the season as the No. 3

Gould earned his second first team nomination with partner Jacob Jung. The duo went 4-5 this year including 3-4 as the No. 1. Gould becomes the second Anteater along with Brian Morton to make All-Big West doubles in each of his four years. Gould was first team in 2010 and earned second honors in 2009 and 2011. Jung earned his first ever All-Big West selection and added a couple more.

Jung also earned second team All-Big West singles honors and Big West Freshman of the Year honors. Jung went 15-13 overall, 10-10 in dual play, and solidified himself as the No. 3 with five wins there. Anteaters have been the freshman of the year in consecutive years now as Ryan Cheung was co-freshman of the year in 2011. They along with Victor Lamm in 2005 remain the sole 'Eaters to win the award.

UC Irvine has now accumulated 62 All-Big West singles selections from 34 different athletes.  In doubles, 35 different duos have earned 40 All-Big West selections.
