Anteaters Drop Opener to Nevada, 6-1

IRVINE, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's tennis team got its 2013 season going with a loss to the visiting Nevada Wolfpack, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

UCI (0-1) introduced a slew of new faces to the mix as four freshmen hit the court in doubles. Jonathan Hammel and Shuhei Shibahara had the closest call sending their match to a tiebreaker before falling. The doubles point overall went to Nevada (1-0) who scored a sweep.

The 'Eaters battled in singles, but could produce just one point. Freshman Reo Asami earned a three-set win as the No. 2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, to score UCI's lone point. Other notable matches were junior Ryan Cheung at No. 4 who battled back to force a third set along with Shuhei Shibahara at No. 5.

UCI opens the season at 0-1 and will jump straight into Big West play this weekend in its next match. The 'Eaters travel to Hawai'i for two matches this weekend. Friday Jan. 18th UCI will play a Big West match with the host Hawai'I Warriors at 4 p.m. Saturday, UCI stays on the island for a neutral site match against Sacramento State at 1 p.m.
