LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine earned a few accolades this week on both team and individual levels.
The Anteaters returned to the ITA rankings this week at No. 75. UCI started the 2012 season ranked 40th which was short-lived. Despite a 1-5 record, the 'Eaters have played tough against ranked foes San Diego and USC before breaking through for a win over 70th-ranked Fresno State.
In other awards news, freshman Jonathan Hammel received the 2012 Evelyn Houseman Lifetime Junior Sportsmanship Award this week. The award is the highest honor given to a junior tennis player and reward an example set by virtue of exemplary conduct while participating in Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) and United States Tennis Association (USTA) programs.
Hammel joins his sister, Stephanie Hammel, as 'Eaters to be honored for their play on and off the court. She claimed the ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award as a senior last season. Jonathan earned his award while being a beacon in the junior circuit in Southern California.
Hammel and the No. 75 Anteaters continue to build on these accomplishments as they are back on the court this week travelling to Wisconsin for a 1:00 p.m. match on Fri. Feb. 8th and finishing up in Illinois to face DePaul, Sat. Feb. 9th at 3:30 p.m.
